Mercia is a Mozambican wildlife veterinarian with the Gorongosa Restoration Project, where she manages the pangolin rehabilitation center and the carnivore program. Her scholarship supports her Master’s studies at the University of London, where she is researching the impact of temperature on pangolin feeding habits in Gorongosa National Park. Her research will address key health and conservation challenges linked to climate change, providing vital insights into how shifting temperatures affect the survival and well-being of pangolins. Mercia is committed to advancing pangolin conservation through innovative rehabilitation protocols, disease prevention strategies, and forensic veterinary medicine, ensuring the survival of the world’s most trafficked mammals. Being the first female Mozambican wildlife veterinarian, Mercia actively serves as a role model for young girls interested in conservation careers.
She was nominated by Dr. Dominique Gonçalves, Manager of the Elephant Ecology Project at Gorongosa Restoration Project, and WCN Guest Speaker.
