Pangolins—South Africa

African Pangolin Working Group (APWG)

Pangolins, the venerable ‘wise old man’ of the African bush, are said to be a totem of good luck and the bringer of rain. Unfortunately, this enigmatic creature, that holds the secrets of 85 million years of evolution, is now the most trafficked mammal on the planet. The African Pangolin Working Group was established to strive towards the conservation and protection of all four African pangolin species by generating knowledge, developing partnerships, creating public awareness and education initiatives, working with government to retrieve pangolins from the illegal trade, and rehabilitating and releasing confiscated pangolins back into appropriate wildlife habitats.
