Solutions in Action

African Manatee Network

AMCO’s long-term vision is to make the coastal and aquatic environment of Africa a threat-free home for aquatic wildlife, taking into account the best interests of the local people. In the short-term, they are continuing to identify the sources of pollution in Cameron’s water bodies and reduce them at source, deploy an acoustic sensor system to detect and deter logging of the riverside forest and further help fishers develop alternative livelihood options like aquaculture and ecotourism, to formalize a multi-national African Manatee Network to unify the expanding group of researchers and other experts dedicated to this gentle giant.

Innovating Citizen Science

AMCO developed an amazing mobile application, called SIREN, a collaborative citizen science platform that empowers local coastal communities around the world and scientists to monitor, study, and protect endangered marine mammals. They use SIREN to allow conservation experts to focus on running their programs without the concern of developing their monitoring software, simplify the recording and use of field data to support clear conservation strategies, and unite users across the globe, NGOs, and governments, as collaborators instead of software customers.

Sustaining Conservation

Dr. Aristide Takoukam Kamla, the Founder and President of AMCO, was both a WCN Scholarship Program recipient and Career Program participant, which helped him launch his career and establish AMCO as a leading NGO in marine conservation.

Quote

“I believe that humans can realign our habits, to be conscious that we took the wrong track, and come back to be in perfect harmony with nature.”
